The first year will culminate in each student building a portfolio which will be assessed in order to determine their suitability to continue onto the second year of the course. Assessment is divided between coursework worth 60% and an examination worth 40% and will determine the overall grade for the A Level.

Two Years
A £25 fee for essential Art kit plus an additional £10 towards the first Art trip is payable on enrolment at the beginning of the first year. During taught practical lessons materials are provided but there is an Art shop within the department catering for a wide variety of materials that can also be purchased by students. Materials and equipment may also be ordered through the shop at the students expense should they have specific requirements. Additional costs associated with departmental visits, trips and advanced workshops may be required during the course.

We offer an additional one year Art Foundation course which is highly recommended for students who wish to develop their portfolio and progress onto an Art or Design based degree.

Observational Drawing is a fundamental part of all work. In the first year students are encouraged to work in a range of mixed media. In the second year more specialist areas such as Textiles, 3D Craft, Graphics etc. can be developed. Students will also get the opportunity to attend Life Drawing classes alongside Art Foundation students. The written content of the course includes annotated sketchbooks and critical analysis of artists' work.

Student Testimonial...

I found that by studying Art & Design at AS and A2 has enabled me to grow as an Artist and as a person. My own personal style has been allowed to flourish due to the understanding I have gained throughout the past two years. I am now into a third year studying Art full time on King Edward VI’s Art Foundation course. Foundation has helped me to refine my practice. I get a lot of support from my peers and from the tutors. I work in a safe, honest and open environment that allows me to express my passion in a productive way that I hope to take with me on to University.
