Biology is the study of living things, the human body and the world around us. In this course, you will learn about human anatomy and disease, cell biology, genetics and genetic engineering, and the plant world. You will be given lots of experience of up to date biological techniques, including DNA fingerprinting, dissection and genetic engineering of bacteria. This course will enable you to progress to study scientific or medical subjects at University or enter a science-based profession.
Minimum College Entry Requirements (5 A*-C or equivalent) including Science BB and Maths 5 and English Language 5.
Two Years   
Students are advised to purchase the course textbook which will be recommended by their teacher (approx £25).There may be small additional costs related to optional visits and trips which may occur during the course. Students must have a practical lab book which can be purchased through the college at a cost of under £5.
As part of a wider programme this course provides an excellent basis for progression to many careers or university courses. Former students of this college have gone on to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Physiotherapy, Zoology, Marine Biology and other Biology degrees at various universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
Biology, like all A level Sciences, is a very academically demanding subject. It is advisable that students choose another Science or Mathematics to study alongside Biology as this will enhance their overall understanding.  Extra study and background reading, both at home and in college, are essential requirements for students who wish to be successful. Some dissection of plant and animal material is necessary to pass the practical elements of the course.
